Maddie made a model of a volcano for the book The Last Girls of Pompeii, which she read over the summer for her summer reading project! Before making the volcano erupt, we made observations and came up with a hypothesis about what we thought would happen, then used some of our IB key concepts (causation, form, and function) to ask better questions about what was happening, why it was happening, and how it works. We wrote down observations when the volcano "erupted," and also drew quick sketches of what we saw. We are still investigating our questions, but have discovered that there's a special reaction between vinegar and baking soda... do YOU know HOW Maddie's volcano erupted??
Math Review 9/23/10
To review for our math test, we rotated around the room to 5 different stations every 5 minutes. Each table featured a different math skill that we had learned over the past week and had 5 math problems to solve... 25 minutes flies by when you're working on math! :)
Shopping A-Round! 9/22/10
To practice our rounding skills and learn more about some real-life situations in which rounding would be helpful, we looked for advertisements in grocery store circulars for different items we could buy, then rounded their costs to the nearest dollar, and then found the estimated cost for three of those items!
Ecosystem ObservationWalk! 9/10/10
We took a walk around Marshpoint's (slightly overgrown!) garden ecosystem to see what kind of living and nonliving things we could find! We saw some really neat berries, a few pretty butterflies, some crickets and ants, cicada exoskeletons, and lots of other amazing things... right in our own backyard! We also talked about how changes to the garden's environment could impact the animals that live there. For example, if the flowers in our garden died, the butterflies who rely on those flowers for nectar would have to leave the garden in order to find food.
Presenting Our "Me Bags" 9/3/10
We each brought in a bag with 5 items that told the class a little something special about us! Miss Miller's camera was having technical difficulties adjusting to the brightness of the whiteboard, however, so a few pictures are fuzzy and a few just didn't turn out at all! :(
First Day of School! 8/30/10
What a busy day we had! Here are a few pictures of us getting to know each other a little better with a survey!
